Kate Winslet in St. John’s behind-the-scenes video

19 Jul

US designer brand St. John has released a video featuring its new brand ambassador, Kate Winslet.

The behind-the-scenes spot shows Academy Award-winning Winslet being shot by Craig McDean for the autumn/winter 2011/12 campaign, while talking about what it means to be the new face of the line.

In it she discusses everything from the location and the collection to who inspires her.

Of the clothes she says: “They make you look extremely chic without trying too hard… and they aren’t clothes that only a model can wear. It means a lot to me to put across that message of strength and power and feminity in a real shape.”

Winslet follows in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie who previously starred for St. John. Her print campaign will launch in September magazines.

Mulberry returns to innovative film techniques for new campaign short

4 Jul

The Fantastic Mr Fox-themed autumn/winter 2011/12 collection from Mulberry has found expression through a new video based on shots taken by Tim Walker.

The spot follows in the footsteps of the brand’s spring campaign, which used a variety of CGI techniques to make the stills come alive.

Starring models Tatiana Cotliar and Julia Saner alongside oversized owls, birds and foxes in an English manor house, this latest film is said to take inspiration from Walker’ distinctive style, which “plays with proportion to blur the edges of reality”.

Blue screen technology and a 3D tracking process sees components overlaid, turning the autumn/winter shoot into a clever moving image that fulfills its aim of “taking the viewer on a magical journey into [a] darkly beautiful new season”.

Ronnie Cooke Newhouse and Stephen Wolstenholme of House and Holme, worked on the creative direction once again, alongside director Luke Losey and cinematographer Serge Teulon. The visual effects were done by film company Framestore.

The film is set to the soundtrack of Animal by Miike Snow.

It can be seen on Mulberry.com, where other videos including of the show and its after party are also hosted.

Behind-the-scenes on Louis Vuitton’s new campaign

1 Jul

Louis Vuitton recently released a video featuring artistic director Marc Jacobs explaining the concept behind its autumn/winter 2011/12 ad campaign featuring models Zuzanna Bijoch, Daphne Groeneveld, Gertrud Hegelund, Nyasha Matonhodze, Anaïs Pouliot, Fei Fei Sun, and of course, those dogs.

“Steven Meisel and I met and decided we would do this wonderful story of beautiful vintage cars, little dogs and fresh-faced young women,” he says.

“It’s a very classic scenario, and of course it suggests travel and is definitely luxurious, but I think we gave it a fresh, modern and sometimes a little bit naughty, tongue-in-cheek spin.”

Each of the nine stills that resulted for the season are shown in detail. “Wherever she’s going, she’s dressed in style this season by Louis Vuitton,” Jacobs concludes.

BoF – AW11, the season that was

18 Mar

Imran Amed of The Business of Fashion always provides a great overview from an industry point of view on the catwalk season that was.

Just a week post Paris, and his autumn/winter 2011/12 round-up is in.

With the Galliano story dominating headlines around the world, both within fashion circles and out, it’s unsuprising Amed’s intro starts with somewhat of a “bitter” note. “Looking back, several of the most salient themes from this round of fashion weeks involve unsavoury behaviour, gossip and highly unprofessional comments from some of the industry’s most important figures,” he says.

He does however go on to highlight  the clothes (focusing on outerwear and prints), the growth of consumer participation and high profile clients in shows, the role of immediacy versus exclusivity (one of my personal favourite debate points at present), and the growing intensity of street style “paparazzi”.

“Think before we tweet”, is a particularly relevant point for this blog. It reads:

It seemed like just another fashion month, and then, with the high-profile meltdown of John Galliano, everything changed in a matter of hours. Soon, the fashion gossip mill was in a frenzy, turbocharged by Twitter which made the whole situation more ugly as the days went by and speculation about Galliano’s successor intensified after he was first suspended, and ultimately dismissed by LVMH.

A tweet by Derek Blasberg from backstage at the Katy Perry concert in Paris, citing an anonymous source which ‘confirmed’ the widespread rumour that Riccardo Tisci would be named Galliano’s successor set off further speculation on websites and blogs, who sometimes took Mr. Blasberg’s comments as though they had come straight from an official Dior press release. I found at least one website that took the Tisci rumour and reported it as fact, without any mention of the source at all.

But Mr. Galliano wasn’t alone. Rumours about the futures of Stefano Pilati, Hannah McGibbon, and Christophe Decarnin dogged designers and lit up the internet throughout Paris Fashion Week, creating a virtual feeding frenzy of immense proportions. We were an industry feeding on ourselves.

So dear fellow members of the fashion Twitterati, let’s think before we tweet. Careers and businesses can be impacted by what may seem like an innocent bit of speculation on Twitter, but can quickly turn into boldfaced headlines on major fashion websites, a hugely destabilising force at the most critical moments during the fashion calendar. We are all still learning how to use this powerful tool responsibly.

Louis Vuitton show to offer panoramic digital experience

7 Mar

Wednesday’s Louis Vuitton show will see consumers offered greater digital access than ever before with a complete panoramic view of the venue.

On www.fashionshow.louisvuitton.com (which is also accessible via the iPad and iPhone) as well as on the brand’s Facebook page, fans will be able to explore both the show and backstage through the eyes of a camera that captures a fully panoramic view of its surroundings.

You’ll be able to look in any direction and explore the room as though you’re actually there. Exclusive behind-the-scenes access will also be made available.

The show will be broadcast live on Wednesday, March 9, at 10am (GMT +1). It will also be possible to return and re-watch the digital experience over the following weeks.

The initiative ties in with the brand’s “commitment to feature purely editorial content through social channels”. It follows in the footsteps of launches such as last year’s 360° view of runway styles and the iPhone app Amble.

Emphasising the luxury company’s commitment to digital, I even like the fact the company’s press release ends with six social media links:

“Stay connected with Louis Vuitton at:
www.facebook.com/louisvuitton | www.twitter.com/LouisVuitton_HQ
www.youtube.com/louisvuitton | www.foursquare.com/louisvuitton
www.louisvuittonamble.com | http://u.youku.com/louisvuitton

Good effort.
