French Vogue to relaunch website, launch social reader app with Facebook

26 Jan

French Vogue is set to unveil a new website (as pictured) on February 6, which will blend its digital and print editions under the charge of Emmanuelle Alt.

Vogue.fr will cover everything from private meetings with fashion creators to backstage access to shoots with fashion photographers including Mario Sorrenti, Peter Lindbergh, Mario Testino and Inez & Vinoodh, and key insights into the current fashion and editing choices of its team.

“The age of internet has given way to a digital world in which media brands can at last express and use their skills, and that has made the creation of new emotions possible, the aim of the new Vogue.fr,” explains Sarah Herz, director of digital affairs at Condé Nast.

The design of the new site is based on large-format pictures and full-screen slideshows. The navigation of it is inspired by the iPad. It also integrates with social networks – allowing fashion shows and events to be followed live, as well as the magazine’s posts on Twitter and Tumblr.

“With this new website, we wanted to go a step further and create a new and original brand experience. We have overthrown the normal codes of web design. Our aim is to make it the digital reference in the field of fashion and trends,” says Delphine Royant, editor of French Vogue.

In further news, the magazine will also launch an application in partnership with Facebook called the “Vogue Paris Social Reader”. It will enable users to see the content read by their friends, consult the whole article within the Facebook ecosystem and share with others:

Well what do you know, the infamous DKNY PR Girl has revealed herself: Aliza Licht, aka Donna Karan’s SVP of global communications.

DKNY PR Girl: Aliza Licht

A self-confessed Twitter and Tumblr-addict, Licht has built herself up to be one of the preeminent fashion stars in the digital space. It’ll be interesting to see how and if things change now the anonymous veil has been lifted.

Her “coming out” video below sees her talking about social media skills being a job requirement and demonstrates life dealing with the brand’s three shows during fashion week:

Tumblr losing its fashion sheen?

2 Sep

Having only ever read positive reports about the fashion industry’s use of Tumblr, such as this one and this one, not to mention interviewed the blogging platform’s fashion director Rich Tong myself a few months ago (and walked away feeling very encouraged about it), it’s interesting to hear things aren’t quite as rosy in the eyes of brands as they seem.

Over the past few days, numerous industry reps have voiced their opinions:

A blogspost from Jessica Coghan, director of digital marketing at Starworks Group, about Tumblr’s proposed sponsorship deals surrounding New York Fashion Week kickstarted the outcry. She called for the platform to provide brands with an analytics dashboard, rather than this “flash in a pan fashion week nonsense”.

Soon followed all manner of comment, including that of Julie Fredrickson, who manages digital and social media at Ann Taylor, highlighting a certain favouritism is at play.

Raman Kia, head of digital marketing at Starworks, pushed the debate further with regards to “one of the largest online retailers of luxury fashion globally” (three guesses as to who that refers to), suggesting that Tumblr’s actual problem is a cultural one based on both prejudice and a lack of empathy. Strong words.

Rather than repeating it all here, check out Lauren Indvik’s incredible analysis over at Mashable: Fashion marketers voice public outcry against Tumblr.

Interestingly, when I interviewed Tong and questioned him ab0ut monetisation, he said the VC funding the company has had is enabling them to focus primarily on growth, rather than on making money. He explained how Tumblr didn’t want to become one of those start-ups that in concentrating on revenue, ends up changing what they do, losing direction and ultimately failing. Looks like he maybe didn’t take his own advice.

Uniqlo launches NYC Voices project in build up to Fifth Avenue store opening

10 Aug

I love how Uniqlo has got into the habit of running a fun and innovative digital initiative alongside each of its more significant launches.

In this instance, it’s the opening of its new flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York, which comes with a campaign called NYC Voices; a “digital collage” of influential New Yorkers.

It profiles the likes of Tumblr founder, David Karp; principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre, Paloma Herrera; and founder and editor-in-chief of Coolhunting.com, Josh Rubin. Each one has a personal story video, a series of Q&A boxes and links to their social profiles.

It was developed by Japanese studio Projector, who previously created the award-winning Uniqlock campaign for the brand.
